Kiyona Energy’s Talent Scouting Tour Finds Something Greater Than Talent; It Finds Hope

There was laughter long before the songs began.
On Friday, 26 June 2026, a team from Kiyona Energy Limited arrived at the Home of Happiness for Children with Disabilities (HHCD) in Lusaka’s Foxdale area carrying boxes of food and toiletries. But what they would leave with was something far more valuable; renewed hope and unforgettable memories.
Home of Happiness for Children with Disabilities is home to between 80 and 90 children living with physical and intellectual disabilities. Every day, the orphanage provides care, education and love to children who have overcome extraordinary challenges, thanks to the commitment of its dedicated teachers and volunteers.
Leading Kiyona Energy’s visit were Human Capital and Operations Manager, Ms. Tamara Kabechani, and Head of Technical and Engineering, Dr. Kabwe Mulenga, together with members of the Kiyona team.
Although the donations of essential food supplies and toiletries were warmly received, the day’s real purpose was much deeper. The team came on what Ms. Kabechani jokingly described as a “talent scouting tour”, not for engineers or managers of today, but for the future leaders, innovators and dreamers among the children.
The visit quickly transformed into a celebration of togetherness as staff and children filled the air with music, singing familiar songs, sharing smiles and creating moments that reminded everyone present that joy knows no disability.
During an interactive career talk, Ms. Kabechani encouraged the children to believe in themselves regardless of the obstacles they may face.
“You should never give up hope or stop chasing your dreams,” she told the children. “With hard work and faith in yourselves, you can achieve whatever you set your minds to. In fact, our Human Capital team has already spotted some potential future Kiyona Energy team members here today.”
Her words resonated throughout the home, but perhaps no story captured that message better than the one shared by Home of Happiness Director and Head Teacher, Mrs. Algenia Zulu.
Mrs. Zulu proudly introduced Dynes Daka, a resident who successfully completed her Grade 12 examinations last year with an impressive 19 points despite living with a physical disability. Dynes shared her dream of becoming a teacher specializing in special needs education so that she could one day return the support she had received to other children facing similar challenges.
It was a powerful reminder that disability does not define ability.
As the team toured the facility, Mrs. Zulu spoke openly about some of the challenges the orphanage continues to face.
“We face challenges with finding teachers on a permanent basis, especially those specialised in dealing with children with special needs, as these roles are largely voluntary,” she explained.
Despite these challenges, she expressed heartfelt gratitude for Kiyona Energy’s visit.
“I would like to thank Kiyona Energy for their generosity in these much needed items and also for sharing their time with our children,” she said.
Also addressing the gathering, Dr. Kabwe Mulenga paid tribute to the teachers and volunteers whose dedication keeps the orphanage running.
“The work you do every day is truly remarkable. You are helping these children build brighter futures. The bonds you have formed with them are shaping lives in ways that cannot be measured.”
For Kiyona Energy, the visit reflected values that extend beyond delivering clean and reliable energy solutions.
“At Kiyona Energy Limited, giving back to the communities around us aligns with who we are and the values we stand for,” Ms. Kabechani said. “As a company and as individuals, we are truly honoured to help wherever we can.”
By the end of the afternoon, food stuff and toiletry boxes had been unpacked, the songs had faded and the photographs had been taken. Yet the greatest gift exchanged that day could not be placed on a shelf.
It was the belief that every child deserves to dream, every dream deserves encouragement, and sometimes all it takes is someone willing to recognise the talent, potential and hope that already exists.
For Kiyona Energy, the talent scouting mission was a success, not because future employees were found, but because future possibilities were discovered.
